The h-index, created by Jorge E. Hirsch in 2005, is an attempt to measure the research impact of a scholar. In his 2005 article Hirsch put forward "an easily computable index, h, which gives an estimate of the importance, significance, and broad impact of a scientist's cumulative research contributions."

Productivity is quantified by the number of papers, and impact by the number of citations the researchers' publications have received. How do I access my h-index on Scopus? The h-index is a simple way to measure the impact of your work and other peoples' research. It does this by looking at the number of highly impactful publications a researcher has published. The The h-index has become an indicator of quality for many researchers and may influence the allocation of research funds. But some question its value.

"An index that quantifies both the actual scientific productivity and the apparent scientific impact of a scientist." (The h-index was suggested by Jorge E. Hirsch, physicist at San Diego State University in 2005. The h-index is sometimes referred to as the Hirsch index or Hirsch number.) A simple definition of the h-index The h-index was originally defined by J. E. Hirsch in a Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences article as the number of papers with citation number ≥ h. 2021-03-10 2018-09-05 2020-12-09 2018-11-02 The H index (initially proposed by Jorge E. Hirsch) of a researcher is defined as the number of articles (research papers) published by the researcher, whose citations are greater than or equal to h-index = the number of publications with a citation number greater than or equal to h.

The index is based on the set of the scientist's most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received in other publications. [ 1] The h-index captures research output based on the total number of publications and the total number of citations to those works, providing a focused snapshot of an individual’s research performance.

For example, a scientist with an h-index of 14 has published numerous papers, 14 of which have been cited at least 14 times.

The h-index is calculated by counting the number of publications for which an author has been cited by other authors at least that same number of times. Kortfattat innebär ett h-index på 10 att en person är medförfattare till minst 10 artiklar där varje artikel blivit citerad minst 10 gånger, totalt minst 100 citeringar, vilket kan vara fallet för en docent eller nybliven professor.
